T he Ateneo de Manila University Press invites book lovers and supporters of Philippine literature to celebrate hope in these difficult times! The launch of FOR THE PEOPLE, WITH THE PEOPLE, as edited by Ma. Regina Hechanova-Alampay, will be on Dec. 3, 2009, Thursday, at 3:00 p.m. The venue is the Ateneo School of Government, Social Development Complex, Admu campus, Katipunan Ave., Quezon City.
With a subtitle of "Developing Social Enterprises in the Philippines," FOR THE PEOPLE, WITH THE PEOPLE features the struggles and triumphs of the men and women behind such groups of CARD-MRI, Conti's Multipurpose Cooperative, Gawad Kalinga, Hapinoy, Kamay Krafts, Pathways to Higher Education, Rags2Riches, and Venture for Fundraising.
As the preface by Dr. Hechanova-Alampay explains, these stories "began with ordinary people dreaming and believing that change could happen, and committing themselves to that change . . . [and show] how bringing together business people, development workers and community leaders can create much more impact that simply doling out money . . . how radical solutions may actually work."
The coming together of diverse individuals, each but collectively trying to respond to social needs, open and willing to learn from and help each other along the way, is what social entrepreneurship is all about—an idea whose time has come, according to Dean Antonio La Vina of the School of Government, in his foreword to the book.
Thus aside from simply being about making high-end accessories from lowly trash, putting up houses, or being able to borrow money to start businesses—already great achievements in themselves—the stories have much to share about actualizing innovative ideas, feeling empowered, persisting and learning to work with others, and reaching goals people themselves have identified as a community.
The book will be available at launch price on December 3, and will be at Christmas sale price until December 15 from the Ateneo Press bookshop (+632-4265984). # # #
